When we were younger, we lived and breathed Nickelodeon's GUTS. Just something about trampolines and bungee cords as required equipment for athletic events made it all the more fun to watch. And who didn't want to climb the Crag? Seriously.
We caught up with the voice behind the Leader Board, Moira Quirk, to see what the accent heavy referee was up to these days. Let's go back to Mo for the Q&A:
What have you been up to?
I am a busy, busy woman. I have a family, a husband and 2 daughters. I live in LA and I've been doing a lot of voice-over and stand-up comedy.
We saw on your website that you've done voices for a lot of video games. What might we have heard you on?
I've done quite a few. I play a crazy maniacal murder crazy, if I may say crazy twice, named Daniella for "Haunting Ground" also called "Demento". I can't tell you how many people tell me how much I scared them in that. I was also in Mercenaries as an on spot reporter getting bombed by Koreans and other people. And in the Hannah Montana Game, which I'm sure is popular with the college boys.
There's a Hannah Montana Game?
Yes, she goes shopping. I play a variety of shop-keepers from around the world and a few crazy rabid fans. But I do much more than just video games.
Really? What else?
Anything where you have to be super British. Some of them I don't even remember, I just turn up and do it.
Are you into sports still?
I wasn't into sports then. I got the job because I was amusing. I came in and I was great at improv and I was unusual.
Now we remember you being the official word. Until it came out of your mouth, we didn't know who came out the victor. So shatter the glass… were you really tabulating results? Or just reading a card?
Well no, sometimes I was in a different spot of the arena and such. The information was always fed thru an earpiece, just in case. But they could have trusted me implicently. I am really good at mathematics, even though I left college with degrees in English and drama.
Just how many times would you say you went back to Mo for the leaderboard?
572,000. Haha, no I've got no idea.
What was with the events on GUTS? I mean, did Nickelodeon just have an in with a trampoline and bungee company?
Must have, musn't they? A lot of it had to do with the art department. Some events were ridiculous, I remember one time where the exec producer, Ali, was asking the guys what they had to do to get ready for the next event. And they said we have to you know move some mats around, grease the wheels. Then scatter some leaves. I burst out laughing because, "leaves"? That’s why I didn't need sports knowledge, the events weren't really sports.
Did you ever climb the Crag?
Of course I did. It was a challenge, some of the arts guys stood at the top hurling foam blocks at me. I even have a piece of the agro-crag. It's about as heavy as you would think it is.
Is it on your mantle?
No, it's too big.
We saw on your site that you've been doing stand-up. We want to know what types of jokes you are famous for? What's your audience? Give us a one-liner.
That's like your uncle telling you to "go, be funny". I can't do it on the spot like that. (Asks husband) Michael, what types of jokes do I do? Sort of the absurdity of being on television, those types of things.
Do people recognize you?
All the time. Just the other day a young man made a very nice milkshake, with a little extra love, because he recognized me. I have people follow me into the bathroom sometimes, asking for an autograph before I can wash my hands. I am happy to sign anything, but please let me sanitize first.
Do you notice a lot of positive response from college kids?
I was at Kent State and a lot of people came to see me, filled the auditorium. I am just realizing now talking to young people, college aged, and it is dawning on me that the show was so much more than I thought. I'm not saying I'm Muhatma Ghandi, dressed in my nylon referee outfit. But I do think the show was a big part of how these kids grew up.
So what are you up to next?
Probably much the same. Voice-overs and shows. If you want me to come to your school, go to my website. I love to go talk to GUTS fans.
