When it came time to chop the head off of yet another head coach at Notre Dame, the executioner was called off at the last minute by university officials, ensuring that Charlie Weiss would have at least one more year to prove himself as commander in chief of the famed football program.
Although the move to keep Weiss is seen by many as an attempt to show conviction and consistency, the truth is that Notre Dame is acknowledging that they are a shitty team and no longer care about “winning”.
“Though this past season fell short of expectation,” said school official Jack Swarbrick, “I am confident that Charlie has a strong foundation in place for future success.”
What jack is really saying is “The 2008 Notre Dame football team was fucking pathetic, and even if we fired Charlie it wouldn’t matter, because next year we are going to suck even more.”
What is more fun to watch: Notre Dame beating the crap out of an opponent (like they should), or Notre Dame getting dominated by a second-rate team like Syracuse? I vote for the latter.
In terms of finance and profit, it might be better for the Fighting Irish too. They will never not have a fat ABC sports contract. Notre Dame is the definitive American Catholic team, and they stand for pride within the Irish American community. So people will always tune in, no matter how they do. Wouldn’t it be more entertaining for the fans if they really blew ass? It might hurt some alumni’s pride, but there are always casualties in failure and underperformance.
I say they sign Weiss to a ten year contract, and raise the education standards for athletes even higher. That way the sub par recruiting Notre Dame has will get even worse. It might put them on par with Harvard or Yale.
